Australia

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I am watching the Australian Open right now – Men’s semifinal.  This match was played last night, but I do not know the outcome…  It is an amazing match.  Currently:

Nadal vs. Verdasco:  Nadal is up 2 sets to 1 and it is the start of the 4th set.  The winner goes on to play Roger Federer, who has never lost a Major Final on a hardcourt.

I absolutely love watching tennis – more than any other sport!  It is unfortunate that each of these matches are played live at 12:30am…  I usually just wait for the replay at noon the following day.

I love tutoring and I have to tutor today at 2:45… This means I might have to miss the ending of this match!  Yikes!  This is an amazing tennis match and I would rather watch it than have to read about it.  Oh well.

And while I watch tennis, the little girl laying next to me is……

Commitment-phobes

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

First of all, I don’t know if I already told this “story” in and earlier blog post, but I will tell it again if I already did.  I always told Andy (when we first ever started talking about having kids) that I wanted my first baby to be a girl and born in the Fall.  I don’t know why I wanted a Fall baby, I just did — maybe it was because I was born in the Fall???  Who knows.

When we found out I was pregnant, but before we knew how far along I was, I immediately tried to figure out the due date.  Well, I figured I was probably 2-3 months pregnant, so that would mean a February/March baby.  I even said to Andy “Oh well, it won’t be a Fall baby…”  But, what do you know??  As luck would have it, I got exactly what I wanted!  A perfect little baby girl born in the Fall.

On another note…  I am getting sick and tired of two things:

1.  People thinking they can get ahold of you at all times of the day, just because you have a cell phone:  calling to change things last minute, cancelling things, always expecting you to pick up or get the message by a certain time, etc, etc, etc…  Don’t get me wrong – I don’t mind if someone tries to call me about a last-minute thing, but do not expect me to pick up or expect me to get the message on time.  Geez!

2.  And, it seems like people can no longer commit to anything — and this seems to be related to cell phones.  I want to make plans with someone and arrange something in advance and I usually get “Why don’t you call me on that day and we can work it out then or play-it-by-ear.”  What happened to just making good old plans???  Or, you make plans to do something and then the person cancels last minute because “something came up.”  It seems like “something comes up” more often with people who have cell phones than with people who don’t.  Maybe it is the convenience of being able to make a quick call and get out of the obligation.

I am not saying that I am guilt-free of either of these activities, I have just reached my limit with them!  I will, from now on, be much more conscious about my own actions.

Quotable

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

At work we have this whiteboard in the front of the office. On the whiteboard are quotes employees have written up over the course of the month.

Usually they are design quotes, marketing quotes, or just funny quotes we wanted to share. Today, I put up my first quote:

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug.Mark Twain

This quote has little application for here, but it got me thinking how enjoyable quotes can be when shared among friends. So, here are a few of my favorites.

  • Don’t go all in before you see the flop! — Stacey’s Mom

  • Attack of the Orchids! Ahhhh!A young friend, after seeing some wild orchids at a dinner party.

  • You know what they say about melon…Eat it alone or leave it alone! — My dad after getting sick off rotten melon at Shari’s

  • Wait! Is he gay? Am I gay? What? — A confused friend while watching Veronica Mars

  • I beat your mom! — Chess club kid to me.

And, here’s a joke for all the married couples.

The little boy came home from school happy, dancing up and down to tell his dad the good news.

“What’s the good news, Son?”, asked Dad.

“Well at school today, I joined the big play!”, said Son.

“Ah! That’s great, Son! Tell me, what part did you get?”

Dramatically and with great pride, Son said, “I got the part of the HUSBAND!”.

Dad shakes his head and says, “Aww…I’m sorry Son. Too bad you didn’t get a speaking role.”

HAHA!

After playing and beating me, the little chess clubber runs over to Andy and so proudly says, “Hey, guess what?  I beat your mom!”

Stranger!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

So, as we got home tonight, the neighbor kid (maybe 11 years old) was getting home.  We don’t know our neighbors – we don’t get out much!  It took us 15 minutes to get ready and we had to take off for chess club… As we were pulling out of the driveway, I noticed that the neighbor boy was still outside.  It is below freezing and he was standing at a darkened doorway.  I told Andy to stop to see if he is OK.  So, Andy rolls down the window and says “Hey, are you okay?  Do you need help?”  Of course the kid doesn’t answer!  Some strange man in a dark SUV in the middle of the night pulls over to ask you if you need help?  STRANGER!

However, I see he looks a little scared, so I get out of the car to go help him (it is pretty much pitch black).  I try not to startle him, me being a stranger and all.. I talk to him as I approach him.  “Hey, do you need help?  Do you need to call your parents?”  He won’t talk to me at all!  I don’t blame him.  STRANGER!  I keep talking to him because it is freezing outside and he has been outside almost 20 minutes.  All of the sudden, I remember his mom’s name.  So I ask him “Your mom is Shyla, right?  I am your neighbor Stacey.”  Finally, since I know his mom, he becomes a little less scared of me.  He turns and looks at me, shivering to death with small tears in his eyes, but he is still skeptical…. I am a STRANGER approaching him in the middle of the night.

So, I can see that he is fiddling with his keys in the door knob and they are totally stuck and won’t turn.  His hands are shaking he is so cold (and probably scared of me) and he cannot get the door open.  So I told him:  “Let me help you turn those keys so you can get inside and get warm and then I have to go.”  He finally just nodded.

I turned the keys, opened the door, and he ran inside.

I think I will go introduce myself tomorrow to the family so the kid knows he can always get help from the not-so-strange neighbor.

Lots-o-posts

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

I have posted a lot in the last 48-hours!  Oh well, give you blog stalkers a lot to read.

A conversation that I had today with the girl I tutor:

Stacey:  “Stop glaring at me.” (after making her do re-do a math problem)

Lianna:  “I am not glaring.  I am Asian, my eyes are naturally slanted, I cannot help it.”

Oh, Lianna… How I love spending time with you each and every day :)

Another Andy says…

Andy: “You know what’s funny?  Well, not funny… But, this ad… Well, it wasn’t an ad… I don’t know what I’m saying.”

And now for my random thoughts before bed:

  • Watched the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall – not good, not bad.
  • Desperately need to catch up and watch the episodes of 24 that have now started.
  • Need to be better about my diet.
  • SO GLAD that our camcorder (the 3rd one that we have had to exchange and buy now works with my Mac, after 4 days of dealing with it).
  • Been enjoying hanging out with our friends, the Medina/Corey family very much lately.
  • Still tutoring my favorite brother/sister duo everyday (yes, you are reading this and you know who you are!)
  • Still need 10 more states to visit our site!
  • Going to go through and categorize every post RIGHT NOW!
